Lecrae was raised by his single mother in southern Houston. At the age of 6, he was sexually abused by his babysitter. As a teenager, his role models were the rapper Tupac Shakur and his uncle, a member of a street gang.
When he was 16, he began using drugs, tasting every drug except crack and heroin. He starts stealing in high school and dealing drugs, using his grandmother’s Bible as a lucky charm. Following a friend’s invitation, he attends a Christian conference in Atlanta and is impressed by the performance of a Christian rap group, The Cross Movement. He is touched by a clear presentation of the gospel by Pastor James White (Christ Our King Community Church), asks forgiveness for his sins, and claims to have experienced a new birth.

Rapzilla shared a song by him called “Amp It Up”. At the end of August 2010, Reach Records announced the track list for Rehab. On September 27th of the following year, Lecrae tweeted that he was releasing a special edition of it. In February 2012, Rapzilla reported he was working on his first mixtape. Eventually, in May 2012, Church Clothes’ title track music video premiered by him on XXL.
In May 2012, Lecrae began recording sessions for his coming reader, graveness, which was blazoned to be released later that time on April 27. On June 21st he appeared live at the Apple Store in Chicago for Black Music Month. Church ClothesVol. 2, hosted by Don Cannon, came out as a mixtape on November 7th, 2013, and Lecrae performed alongside The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 18th, 2014. Fast forwarding to August 21st, 2020, and also December 3rd, 2021 saw the releases of No Church In a While- a ten-track collaboration reader with 1K Phew- independently.
