At the age of fifteen, Waters had the ambition to become an architect. He enrolled at Regent Street Polytechnic and there encountered Rick Wright and Nick Mason. Israeli–Palestinian conflict

In 2006, Waters was asked by Palestinian supporters to view the Israeli-West Bank barrier and was scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv. He moved his Tel Aviv concert to Neve Shalom and spoke against the barrier. In 2013, he voiced his support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement.

Furthermore, he wrote an open letter in Salon that criticized Bon Jovi for performing in Tel Aviv in 2015. Two years later, Waters joined with 50 other signatories on a letter that urged Radiohead to cancel their concert there. They did not follow through with this.
